Presentation Tips & Tricks

As requested, I have now published the presentation on slideshare.

Some good sites to find inspiration are presentationzen, which we already have seen, and also, my favorite, noteandpoint that has a lot of beautiful presentations.

How to create slides that rock and 7 tips to create visual presentations are two good presentations that talk about how to make good presentations. Meta-presenting!

About D10 - AllThingsD

About D10 - AllThingsD:
Welcome to D, an executive conference unlike any other.

It starts this week!

The video archives of previous AllThingsD are interesting to watch!
This is the conference organized by the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher.

"D is different from other conferences: no canned speeches, no marketing pitches, and no bull. Instead, creators and executive producers Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher put the industry’s top players to the test during unscripted conversations about the impact digital technology will have on our lives now and in the future. The results are unprecedented glimpses into the ideas and strategies of the industry’s most creative thinkers."

Have a good week.

Hey all. Here are five interesting pieces of news that I've gathered from the tech news sphere within the recent days. Enjoy!

Microsoft quietly launches So.cl social network

Is Microsoft finally rising to the challenge? Are they going to compete with Facebook? No, Microsoft has no intentions of taking their throne, yet. So.cl (pronounced social) is Microsoft's latest experiment from their FUSE Labs. It's a community that combines social networking and searching for the purpose of learning. Users log in with their Facebook or Windows Live accounts to network with their peers and share information. According to Microsoft, it's an experiment on the concept of "open search". Here's how desperately cities want Apple stores

Apparently, Apple stores are more than a little attractive to shopping malls. In some cases, Apple is even offered very advantageous deals to come to a certain commercial nest. For example, in Grand Central Station in New York, Apple pays less than half the rent than other places have to pay, and are not even required to share profits, as the other stores are required to do. More details are in the full article.

'Steve Jobs' biography to become Aaron Sorkin movie

Have you seen The Social Network? That movie was written by Aaron Sorkin who is now writing the screenplay for the upcoming adaption of Steve Jobs' biography. He also wrote screenplays for movies such as "The West Wing," "Moneyball," and "A Few Good Men." The company producing the film will be Sony Pictures Entertainment. For more info and rumors about actors, read the full article here.

Why Apple, RIM, Nokia and Motorola are arguing over what your next SIM card will look like

It looks like Apple wants to have a say about the design of the next generation, 4FF, of SIM cards. Apparently (as usual?) Apple decides to go in its own direction, away from the other companies, by proposing a SIM card design different from the others. This design might look simpler but is more costly, especially for companies that sell cheap phones where the margins are tight, because it will require a drawer or tray to be inserted in the phone. More about the debate can be found here.

Facebook rules: Everyone can vote on new privacy policy

It's good to see that there are forces out there that together can work against super giants such as Facebook. Thanks to the group "Europe versus Facebook," a late change in Facebook's privacy policy will be put up for a vote by the community. They received more than 7,000 comments on this recent change and by Facebook's own terms of service they now have to put this change up for a vote. More about "Europe versus Facebook" can be found here.

The Price To Earnings Ratio Explained

The Price To Earnings Ratio Explained

We talked about P/E ratios in our last class when we had Chloé P. as our guest.  I was surprised that not many of you knew the terms on the paper like bear market or bull market.

I'm not sure I explained the P/E properly so here's a video explanation from my favorite investment and finance vocabulary site:  investopedia.com .

Hope you all have a great vacation next week!

Is this something you want to do? Read all about it on the Register.  Or is this an April Fools Day announcement?  Apparently not... here's a link to the original AP article.

(BTW Do you know this UK site? "The Register"-- "Biting the hand that feeds IT" is their slogan.  They're also home to the BOFH... one of the earliest forms of Internet humor!

Who knows... just to be safe, make sure all your online presence is something you can share!

We'll have a guest tomorrow in class. She's presently a junior at Skidmore College and will be happy to meet you and talk about her professional experience so far and American university life.

(Everything you wanted to know and never dared ask!  So think of some good questions!)

Google 'Wasting' $16 Billion On Projects Headed Nowhere

"Google's engineering culture is 'wasting profits,' according to a new report published today that refers to $16 billion worth of Google projects that are going nowhere. According to the analysis, it's not that the ideas — such as the Kansas City Fiber Project, driverless cars, and other engineering efforts — are bad. Rather, it's Google's poor execution that is killing the company and adding billions of dollars worth of projects to its 'trash pile.'"
With this article, discover some flaws of the giant Google. And maybe you will be interested in joining them to fix this.

The link to the article.

What do you think?

james
"Everybody wants to hire great people. But there is a lot of competition and not everybody may know your startup. You have to be convincing and to know exactly what you want. For that, you should ask you some simple questions like : "In twelve months, what will this person have achieved?", "Do I like this person from a personal standpoint?" All of David Bizer's tips, Talent Geek at HackFwd, in this excellent vidéo."

World Water Day

Hello everyone!

Here is a page about a international campaign for a conscientious consume of water and some products that use plenty water in their production process. Here it is:

Actually, the World Water Day was the March 24th, but some events will still happen the following days. Moreover, you can find some curious information in their website, notably the amount of water required to produce a single 100g steak ( http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/downloads/WWD2012_VW_FRIEZE.pdf )

Pair programming : engineers are not alone anymore

You’re in a car driving 100 miles per hour on a dirt road. The turns are 100º hairpins and there are inclines and dips that would make a normal car’s shocks fall right off their axles.
Lucky for you, you’re not alone. You have a partner. Because there are two of you, you can split the responsibilities of getting to the finish line first – in one piece.
  • Driver: focused on the intense control of the steering wheel, manning the accelerator, brake pedals and the clutch, and don’t forget the all-important emergency brake
  • Navigator: tasked with reading map directions, checking wind speed/engine lights and alerting the driver of impending turns, dips and inclines.
This is the basis of pair programming. The deliberate practice of staffing every workstation with two software engineers focused on writing software together. Similar to rally racing, the driver and navigator have the same goal – write high-quality and maintainable code that works.
